This quartet is so amazing on so many different levels...go see 'em whilst they still exist in PDX. I really think this one could go a long way in the Jazz world!

I used him almost exclusively in my band when he used to reside in the NYC area, as he always brought so much knowledge and artistry to the music. And combined with his multi-instrumentalist abilities, Chris Brown is a unique talent that's not often found.

80's Rewind & Unwind @ Jimmy Mak's

As a group that's dedicated to upholding the highest level of excellence, these weekly performances at Jimmy Mak's represent an earnest desire to raise the bar for all music in Portland. And this group does so by re-imagining some of the most iconic popular songs from the 1980's through a musical sensibility that's akin to that of early Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and more. So if you're looking for a very different musical experience, then look no further!

80's Rewind & Unwind @ Jimmy Mak's

With 2016 having already gotten off to a fast start for this group, in addition to the many fantastic opportunities that also await us throughout the rest of the year, I look forward to being able to reward our strongest supporters with the types of gifts and opportunities that only this group is prepared to give. So if you're not already on board with the musical movement that we're trying to create here in Portland, I'd like to encourage you to begin by coming out to Jimmy Mak's EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT so you too can be counted as part of our tribe.

So as always, come get your fill of Jazz music from the #1 place to do so in the state of Oregon evey Wednesday, as between my father's [Mel Brown] band (7:30-9pm) and mine, there's no other family affair quite like this one that you'll find anywhere in the NW that's all under one roof.

"Ready for Freddy" (feat. Marquis Hill) @ PDX Jazz Fest

Trumpeter, composer and recent Thelonious Monk Competition winner, Marquis Hillwill make his Jazz Festival debut on a program tribute to one of his main influences Freddie Hubbard.  Raised in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, his introduction to music was made by taking up the drum kit in the fourth grade. Upon finalizing his formal education with a Master of Music degree in Jazz Pedagogy from DePaul University, Hill began working more frequently both as a sideman and a leader of his own ensemble, the Blacktet , and will be performing the National Anthem at the Portland Trailblazers’ game the night prior to his concert at the Festival.

In addition to performance, Mr. Hill has been an active educator. He has held teaching positions at numerous institutions including the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin; The NIU Summer Jazz Camp; The University of Illinois at Chicago where he was a faculty member for two years. He currently resides in New York City and has four albums to his credit: New Gospel (Skiptone 2011)Sounds of the City(Skiptone 2012)The Poet (Skiptone 2013), and Modern Flows vol. 1 (Skiptone 2014)

"Chuck Israels: Coltrane Time" @ PDX Jazz Fest (feat. Jimmy Greene/Charlie Porter)

Composer/arranger/bassist Chuck Israels, whose musical resume extends from Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, J.J. Johnson, and John Coltrane, all the way to people such as Paul Simon, will be performing at Jimmy Mak's for the 2016 PDX Jazz Fest, which is highlighting the 90th birthday of the late great John Coltrane. And joining him will be a sextet that will feature saxophonist Jimmy Greene and trumpeter Charlie Porter.

Israels had the good fortune to be included in a recording session with John Coltrane in March of 1958 which, again, this program draws its inspiration from. States Israels, “John had gained attention in the Miles Davis Quintet and was one of the accomplished tenor players of the period but not yet the iconic idol he was to become.  It was a milestone in my work as a recording jazz musician – my first professional recording.”

"Find Your Voice" @ Jimmy Mak's

As this Portland State University hosted concert @ Jimmy Mak's is being used to bring attention to their Jazz department's scholarship program, it will also highlight three bands that are led by three of the departments faculty members. And of the three, I'll be performing with two of them [The Ezra Weiss Sextet & George Colligan Trio]. But augmenting at least one of the bands [George Colligan Trio] will be Jazz trumpet star Sean Jones, whom happens to be a former college classmate of mine from Rutgers University, and whom I haven't worked with in over 10 years. So needless to say, this will be a sweet reunion for the both of us!
